The road ahead…

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do–
determined to save
the only life you could save.

San Xavier del Bac

We drove south of Tucson and visited the San Xavier del Bac mission. It is located on the on the Tohono O’odham San Xavier Indian Reservation; seemingly standing alone in the Sonoran desert.

The mission was founded in 1692 with construction beginning on the current church in 1783. Stunning.

We had one camera and both took turns taking photos. This one is yours hon, and if you are reading this I think you need to get back into photography again. I really do; such a good eye.

Prickly

We were down in Phoenix and Tucson AZ this past week. I think this is a Barrel Cactus, but it also could be a Pincushion Cactus. I bought a postcard that illustrates the different type of cacti but I must admit I still have a tough time identifying the different types, especially since the postcard shows the Barrel Cactus with red flowers, not yellow. Oh wait, a quick ‘google’ verifies it’s a Barrel. Prickly little devil no matter what the name. Here’s a close-up of the business end:

Wading in

Another point and shoot. I loved the richness of colour in the prairie grasses:

As with the previous post, it’s  hard to see what’s going on in the LCD preview screen; sometimes surprises pop up…

Point and shoot

I always carry a little point and shoot with me, just in case. It can be a little chancy to work with because I can’t always see the image I want to take on the LCD screen, especially if the sun is bright.

I was inspired by the beauty of the mountains on this day, so I just did the point and shoot thing: kind of shooting blind and hoping for some results. I think this turned out ok.
